The TaylorMade Burner Superfast driver is a worthy successor to the iconic Burner name.
The distinctive elongated head looks like Chris Hoy s helmet, but we like it and it helps provide the low deep centre of gravity that gives this club the extra forgiveness it needs.
TaylorMade say this club is all about distance and there are several features that help it live up to this claim. The shaft is 1 inch longer than usual and this is really noticeable at address. The club is also lighter at well under 300 grams thanks to a lighter 48 gram shaft.
However there is a downside to all this in that the shot dispersion is likely to be wider than the R9 driver range as the longer shaft was definitely be harder to control by our posse of testers.
TaylorMade say that is OK as the feedback they got from the market was that amateurs wanted distance over accuracy and were quite happy to play from the semi-rough a bit further down the fairway. To help with this, the Burner Superfast driver also has TaylorMade s largest face they have ever made on a driver and combined with the inverted cone technology, the extra forgiveness does well to keep the ball on the straight and narrow.
We found the performance to be very good with great sound and feel and a nice trajectory. The looks and colour scheme on top of the head divided opinion among our testers, with some liking the modern looks and others put off by the red line on the crown.
It was a little longer than the equivalent R9 driver but the longer shaft did mean a little less directional consistency. However if distance is your thing then the TaylorMade Burner Superfast driver is worth trying out.

Not impressed with the TaylorMade Burner Superfast. I prefer a driver head that looks a bit more chunky than this one with its tailing at the rear and because of the longer shaft, the head looks a little smaller, lessening confidence at set up. Because of my age 70 and relatively slow swing and ball speed I though I might get a bit more distance out of the club but I have been disappointed. The odd pure strike travelled a good distance but I lost accuracy over my existing driver. The shaft fitted was a Fubuki 50 which felt OK but played quite lifeless and certainly was a bit too whippy. I think its a big of a con to imply extra distance when most of any distance gained could well be due to the extra length of shaft. This might be OK for some but since I stand 5 9 I was a bit uncomfortable with the wider arc and I think it would take some time to adjust with not a lot of reward at the end. One of the previous reviewers made the comment that for the price there are better drivers on the market and I would heartily endorse this.

I was looking forward to hitting the new Burner Superfast driver as I have always been a fan of TaylorMade woods and have owned both the R5 and R7 in the past. Although it took some getting used to the new aerodynamic shape of the Burner Superfast and red line on the crown look good at address and the driver feels as light as TaylorMade say it will. The shaft is longer than standard in a bid for extra length for all levels of player and this was certainly noticeable and took some getting used to. Unfortunately I cannot really say this translated into performance for me as I did not find any discernable improvement in length and although it felt solid across the clubface the longer shaft also resulted in a lack of accuracy. The Burner Superfast is a nice driver but in the very competitive market place I think there are better clubs out there.

Looks first: I didn t take to the appearance of the club. The almost triangular shape is good for aerodynamics but I didn t think it was much to look at. The clubhead is big - and that has its benefits - but does it need to look quite so big.
The longers shaft also seems to draw attention to the larger clubhead and I think I d have to use this club for a while before I become totally comfortable with it at address.
But looks, as we re always told, aren t everything. I always approach drivers with caution. My swing speed isn t all that quick and the Superfast certainly does help with that. When you catch this flush it will travel. And that s brilliant - but sometimes you want the ball to go where you want as well.
I wasn t all that impressed with the dispersion and didn t really feel like the advantages brought by the longer shaft outweighed that inconsistency.
A great club for distance and people who struggle with slow swing speeds will enjoy the ease with which you can get the ball up, up and away. Unfortunately it s not really the club for me though.
